The Perfect Sleep: Using Essential Oils

Getting a full night's sleep can be difficult. Life can keep us up at night wondering about all the things we need to do the next day and all the challenges we faced during the day that has past. Even though we are mentally and physically exhausted nights can be spent tossing and turning. That feeling of laying in bed looking up at the ceiling knowing that you have to get up early the next morning can be so irritating and annoying.

Having a good night's sleep is important to our physical and mental wellbeing. Sometimes just a little extra shut-eye can really help to improve the way we feel and the way we operate during the day. Sleep is crucial for day to day function and I have been able to change the way I fall asleep at night through the use of essential oils.

Aromatherapy can be used by both adults and children to assist in creating a calming and relaxing state that may result in a healing, full night's sleep.

What Essential Oils can assist in improving sleep?

Many essential oils have a calming, sedative and soothing impact on our nervous system resulting in a good night's sleep. The essential oils that I LOVE using to help me get to sleep at night include:

  • Geranium;
  • German Chamomile;
  • Jasmine;
  • Lavender;
  • Mandarin;
  • Patchouli;
  • Petitgrain;

The reason why I use these essential oils to assist in getting some good shut-eye at night is that they can help in creating a calm space for a peaceful, healing sleep. The aroma of these essential oils is also very inviting and delightful to the senses. You can blend a combination of these oils or simply use one or two at a time. It really is a personal preference and will depend on what works best for you.

Essential oils that you should avoid if you struggle to fall to sleep at night include Peppermint, Rosemary, Grapefruit, Lemongrass, and other stimulating and energising essential oils.

How to use Essential Oils to improve sleep?

There are many different ways in which you can incorporate essential oils into your nightly routine that will positively impact the way you fall asleep and stay asleep at night.

There are four different things that you can do that will really assist in getting that much-needed sleep.

 1. Add eight (8) drops of essential oil into your diffuser. Start diffusing an hour or two before you go to sleep. This will ensure that your bedroom will be the perfect sanctuary for sleep-time. Then let it diffuse for another hour or so until you slowly drift off into a deep and relaxing sleep.

2. Make a pillow mist. Get a 100ml spray bottle and fill with distilled water. Then top it with your choice of essential oils. Lightly spray your mist onto your pillow and sheets before sleep. Make sure you shake the bottle before each use.

3. Have an essential oils bath before bed. Add three (3) to five (5) drops of essential oils to a carrier oil and add to a warm bath.

4. Add eight (8) to ten (10) drops of essential oil to 30ml of carrier oil to make a relaxing massage blend. Massage the blend in or get your partner to give you a massage.

I regularly use the first two options and they really help me get a perfect night's sleep.
